Green aeration compressor wins innovation prize
An aquaculture specific air compressor being trialled by salmon producer Scottish Sea Farms has earned its Canadian developer a Can $150,000 innovation award in British Columbia.
BC-based Poseidon Ocean Systems was awarded the cash by government agency Innovate BC.
Poseidon’s Flowpressor Technology Platform, which produces compressed air that can be used to run aeration systems, oxygen generators, and feed systems, reduces diesel consumption by 55%.
Steel cage
Poseidon, which raised Can $5 million in Series A financing in January, also builds what it claims is the world’s best steel cage, the Trident Hybrid Steel Cage, which uses flexible HDPE pipes to improve safety and stability while lowering overall operational costs.
Scottish salmon farmer Loch Duart has bought an assembly of 14 pens that each measure 24m x 24m for its Badcall site.
Poseidon was one of 10 finalists in Innovation BC’s Aquaculture Innovation Awards event last week, and one of three winners. ThisFish Inc also won $150,000 and Industrial Plankton won $25,000.
Traceability software
ThisFish’s Tally traceability software for the aquaculture sector enables significant improvements in time and quality through automation and predictive analytics. It links data from farm to factory through IoT (Internet of Things) devices and tablet computers and uses machine learning algorithms.
Industrial Plankton develops and produces algae bioreactors for live feed production in aquaculture hatcheries. The company’s technology is currently used in 20 countries, primarily in shellfish and shrimp hatcheries.
The Aquaculture Innovation Awards fund innovations that solve challenges faced by BC aquaculture. The awards encourage sustainable growth, competitiveness and adaptability of BC aquaculture.
Clean technology
Fin Donnelly, the BC government’s Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries and Aquaculture, said: “BC is a leader in both developing innovative seafood technology and production, and we’re showcasing those local ideas and solutions through our new BC Aquaculture Innovation Awards.
“By fostering new and exciting partnerships between our aquaculture and technology sectors we are providing economic opportunities while strengthening both our food system and clean technology for future generations.”
