Aquafeed producer BioMar has launched a new functional feed developed to help farmed fish endure challenging conditions, such as outbreaks of salmonid rickettsial septicaemia (SRS).

BioMar says the feed, called SmartCare Endurance, features a unique blend of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that work to mitigate oxidative stress, reduce inflammation, and enhance the fish’s natural immune response. This results in a more resilient fish, better equipped to withstand threats from pathogens such as Piscirickettsia salmonis, the causative agent of SRS, and viral diseases like IPN (infectious pancreatic necrosis) and PD (pancreas disease).

In a press release, BioMar stated that repeated trials have shown statistically significant improvements in survival rates and lower markers of tissue damage in fish fed with SmartCare Endurance.

'A powerful tool'

“SmartCare Endurance provides farmers with a powerful tool to support fish health during environmental challenging periods,” said Torunn Forberg, BioMar’s product marketing manager for SmartCare. “This new product reflects our commitment to helping farmers overcome the challenges of modern aquaculture while prioritising fish welfare and performance.”

SmartCare Endurance will first launch in Chile, where BioMar says it has shown great potential in addressing local challenges. SRS is a bigger problem for salmon farmers in Chile than for those in other regions.

“SmartCare Endurance will offer producers a practical, science-driven and cost-effective solution for fostering resilience and sustainability in aquaculture operations,” said Gabriela Heim, commercial director form BioMar Chile.
