Under-review feed plants 'will still supply Mowi farms'

There might be a different logo on our workwear, but we will continue production, says feed boss

Mowi has reassured workers at its feed mill in Scotland that the facility will still provide feed for its salmon farms if the company decides to sell it as part of a global strategic review of its feed division announced yesterday.

The feed facility at Kyleakin on the Isle of Skye will be assessed alongside the company’s feed mill at Valsneset in Norway.

Mowi, the world’s biggest salmon farmer, said the feed plant at Kyleakin has been a success since opening in 2019, producing 180,000 tonnes of fish feed each year which is used by Mowi’s salmon farms in Scotland, Ireland, Norway and the Faroe Islands, as well as supplying third parties.

Mowi will need even more feed going forward and this will come from the factories at Valsneset and Kyleakin

Different outcomes

The review of the feed division is designed to assess whether it is best for Mowi to continue to produce its own feed or concentrate on farming and processing salmon. There are different possible outcomes of this review including a sale and continued ownership, the company said.

“Around 60 people are employed locally at the feed mill at Kyleakin and we will continue to support our staff and ensure that they are informed throughout this process as the review takes place,” Mowi said in a statement.

Atle Kvist, Mowi’s chief operating officer for feed, said: “I understand that this creates uncertainty, but Mowi will need even more feed going forward and this will come from the factories at Valsneset and Kyleakin. In the future, there might be a Mowi logo or a different logo on our workwear, but we will continue to produce the best salmon feed possible.”
