Top firms target UK’s only aquaculture jobs fair
Stirling University’s Institute of Aquaculture is hosting what is believed to be the only aquaculture careers fair in the UK next month.
Aquaculture Careers 2017, which will take place on Tuesday 18 April at the University's Pathfoot Lecture Theatre, is billed as a chance "hear direct from industry, make important connections and explore different career paths".
Institute of Aquaculture research student Sam Houston, who with fellow PhD students Lynn Chalmers and Athina Papadopoulou form the Aquaculture Students' Association which is organising the event, told fishfarmingexpert.com: “As far as I am aware we are hosting the only aquaculture careers fair in the UK.
"The whole point of the day - and what makes it different from other careers fairs - is that it is aquaculture-specific. That might sound like we are narrowing it down, but aquaculture has a lot of support sectors too, and that’s reflected in the organisations who will be making presentations and giving talks.
"There will be people from all sorts of different careers – and all sorts of different career levels, from CEOs to people who are just starting out in the industry."
On the radar
"The careers fair is open to all Scottish postgraduates of aquaculture and we are hoping to attract about 80 to 100 students on the day."
Confirmed speakers are: Gilpin Bradley from the SSPO; Charles Allen from Marine Science Scotland; Theresa Fernandez from Scottish Salmon Company; Warren Turner (video presentation) from Nam Sai Farms; Ronnie Souter from Aqualife; Matthijs Metselaar from Benchmark Animal Health, Sean Black from Fishguard; Don Griffiths (video presentation) from Fish Vet Asia; Alan Bourhill from Skretting; Rhuaraidh Edwards from Fusion Marine; Marcos Garcia from Marine Harvest (Scotland); Heather Jones from SAIC; and a closing statement from Herve Migaud, director of the Institute of Aquaculture.
