Aged between 18 and 25, the students are from Groene Welle training centre, which specialises vocational qualifications, and are spending two weeks on site to put their learning in to practice. Under the guidance of SSC staff, the group has been assisting with daily activities, including fish health checks and net washing, gaining valuable hands-on experience.

The students, as part of their Sport, Fisheries and Aquaculture course, are studying an online programme called Exploring Diversity in Aquaculture (EDA), which has been specifically designed to increase the number of young people entering the sector.

Pamela Ernstberger, Instructional Designer for the EDA, said: “This opportunity gives the students a unique, all-round experience of what is a fast growing and ever-evolving industry. The staff on site have been fantastic, guiding the students and sharing their knowledge and skills. Three students have already expressed an interest in working with the company, which is a good measure of how successful this programme has been.”

Craig Anderson, Managing Director at The Scottish Salmon Company, said: “This is the first time the students have been exposed to an operational environment. We recognise the importance of supporting future talent for the industry and showcasing the diverse opportunities available across the sector.

“We are really glad to have been able to form a link with Groene Welle in order to facilitate their visit and hope, following this experience, the students will return to college with a new zest for the industry.”
