Norway had record volume of salmon in sea in April

Norway’s salmon farmers had more biomass in the sea at the end of April than ever before at that time of year, according to industry statistics provider Akvafakta.

There were 718,000 tonnes of salmon in the sea at the end of April. That is 6% more than the 680,000 tonnes in the cages at the same time last year, and the highest value ever.

In addition, there were 37,000 tonnes of trout in marine sites, which was 3,000 fewer tonnes than as of April 2020.

99,000 tonnes exported

Norway exported 99,000 tonnes of salmon in April, 4% more than the same month the year before. The export value was NOK 5.8 billion (£495 million), 9% higher than in April 2020.

Trout exports amounted to 4,700 tonnes (down 7%), with a value of NOK 250 million (up 5%).

Fish farmers stocked cages with 44.1 million salmon, 16% fewer than in April last year. Trout farmers set out 2.2 million juveniles, 31% fewer than in April 2020.
