Kyleakin Primary was awarded a funding package to support the development of its end-of-term winter show. The package included a one-day winter workshop with the National Theatre of Scotland, plus £500 which contributed to a professionally designed set, costumes and production equipment.

The pupils performed a festive hoedown Prickly Hay, celebrating seasonal festivities with an alternative to the traditional nativity play. The pupils showcased a variety of song and dance as they told the story of Christmas from the view of a shrew.

Funding support

Following a tour of theatre performances presented as part of Theatre in Schools Scotland, schools across the west coast of Scotland and the Hebrides were invited to apply to SSC for their chance to win funding support.

A team from National Theatre of Scotland visited Kyleakin Primary School on Tuesday, December 9, during which the children benefited from a session of confidence and creativity building. The team offered expert help and advice on developing the school production with staging techniques.

This year marks the fourth year of SSC support for Theatre in Schools Scotland, a National Theatre of Scotland initiative, produced with Imaginate to bring high quality theatre to school children in remote and rural areas of Scotland, areas where many SSC staff live and work.

Memorable performance

Su Cox, communications and new business development director at SSC, said: “Congratulations to Kyleakin Primary School for a well-deserved win and for delivering a memorable performance to the local community.

“With sites throughout the west coast of Scotland, we are proud to play our part in bringing the arts to the remote and rural communities.”

Mary Logan, acting head teacher at Kyleakin Primary, said: “We are extremely grateful to The Scottish Salmon Company for awarding Kyleakin Primary School a winner of the 2019 Winter Show Competition.

“The Christmas show Prickly Hay was a huge success, the pupils hugely benefited from the workshop learning important skills to build their characters. As a school, we encourage creative thinking which is enhanced through our end of term show.”
