Scots struggle in US market
While Chile, Norway and Canada all achieved increased export volumes to the US in the first month of the year, Chinese and Scottish exports to the States decreased.
Chile was the largest exporter of salmonids to the USA in January, exporting a total of 12,938 tonnes - a 4.8 per cent increase compared to the same month of 2015.
The value of these exports was US$ 99.65 million, 18.3 per cent lower than the US$ 121.92 million registered in first month of 2015.
Canada was in second place, with returns of US$ 49.07 million and 7,813 tonnes. Those results represent 11.1 and 21.0 per cent increases in value and volume, respectively, compared to January 2015.
According to the trade data published by the Fisheries Statistics Division of the NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service, Norway was in third place, with sales of US$ 33.65 million and 3,584 tonnes. Those numbers represent 9.0 and 10.1 per cent increases in value and volume, respectively.
Meanwhile, China (China, Hong Kong and Taipei) was in fourth place, with returns of US$ 23.16 million and 4,230 tonnes. These figures represent 19.4 and 8.9 per cent decreases in value and volume, compared to January 2015.
Finally, the United Kingdom was in fifth place, with returns of US$ 7.81 million and 906 tonnes. Those results represent 9.7 and 13.0 per cent decreases in value and volume, respectively, compared to the first month of the past year.
In total the US imported 32,532 tonnes of salmonid products, worth US$ 238.8 million in January.
