US aquafeed protein supplier joins Ecuador shrimp partnership
US company Houdek-Prairie AquaTech, which produces fermented plant protein for aquafeed, has joined the Sustainable Shrimp Partnership (SSP) as an associate member.
South Dakota-based Houdek says its proprietary fermentation process upcycles abundant agricultural processing by-products, such as soybean meal and dried distillers’ grain, to produce an easily-digestible ingredient that reduces the need for less functional and less sustainable ingredients.
The company said the collaboration with SSP marked a significant step towards advancing responsible practices in the shrimp aquaculture industry and was rooted in a shared vision of promoting sustainable aquaculture production and minimising the ecological impact of aquaculture operations.
A team effort
“Success in aquaculture is a real team effort, from ingredient developer to feed mill to shrimp farm to feeding the world,” Houdek chief executive Mark Luecke said in a press release.
SSP is a group of leading Ecuadorian shrimp farming companies and feed and nutrition suppliers committed to transforming the future of shrimp aquaculture.
“SSP warmly welcomes Prairie AquaTech to our dynamic association, embracing their expertise and shared dedication to driving sustainable aquaculture practices forward,” said SSP director Pamela Nath.
“By joining forces, we are confident that our collaboration will contribute significantly to the evolution of sustainable shrimp farming. Together, we can make a lasting difference in the industry and create a more sustainable future for shrimp aquaculture.”
