Grieg Newfoundland celebrates its ‘rising stars’
Two of Grieg Seafood Newfoundland’s staff have been given awards that celebrate the next generation of aquaculture players.
Chris Malanka and Laura Dwyer, the company’s smoltification manager and R&D manager respectively, were both selected by the Newfoundland and Labrador Aquaculture (NAIA) industry as recipients of Distinguished Early Career awards.
The awards mark the achievements of the up-and-coming generation within the Newfoundland aquaculture sector, acknowledge outstanding talent and encourage rising stars to become tomorrow’s industry leaders.
The company tweeted its congratulations yesterday: ‘Congrats Laura and Chris! We're really proud of you and excited to see what accomplishments your futures hold!’
Greig Seafood established its new farming region in Newfoundland in April 2020 and is building up operations from scratch, with farming rights in the Placentia Bay area.
Triploid salmon
In a recent post in the NAIA newsletter, Grieg discussed how it is bringing innovation to Newfoundland in the form of triploid salmon.
‘Our eggs are produced by the Icelandic company Stofnfiskur, a world recognised supplier of salmon eggs. Because these eggs are sterile, it reduces the risk of environmental interactions with wild populations.’
The first batch of eggs were received last summer into the newly built Marystown hatchery and the company is expecting its first harvest in November 2022.
Grieg announced the closure of its Shetland business last year and said it would now focus on growth in Canada and Norway. It valued the Scottish company at £125 million in its annual report.
