GAA extends innovation award entry date
The Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) has extended the deadline for entries to its seventh annual Global Aquaculture Innovation Award until July 15.
Three finalists will be invited to GAA’s GOAL 2019 conference in Chennai, India from October 21 to 24 to present their innovation, with the audience selecting the winner.
Flights and accommodation will be paid by the competition, sponsored by Preferred Freezer Services.
Examples of innovations eligible for entry include:
- technologies that mitigate the occurrence of animal diseases or parasites, or that reduce or eliminate the use of antibiotics to treat animals;
- technologies that improve production efficiencies at the hatchery or farm levels while mitigating environmental impact;
- advances in offshore or land-based recirculation technologies;
- novel feed ingredients;
- reductions in carbon footprint through improved energy efficiency or regeneration;
- social programmes designed to improve living and working conditions at the farm or processing levels.
Last year’s winner was Osmo Systems’ Osmobot, a water quality monitoring system that uses optical sensing technology to allow farmers to monitor their water quality online.
In 2017 the prize went to Corbion (formerly TerraVia) for its AlgaPrime DHA aquaculture feed ingredient and in 2016 Quantidoc’s mucosal mapping technology, which employs stereology to measure and better understand mucous on gill, gut and skin tissues, won.
The competition is open to both individuals and companies performing activities related to aquaculture may submit applications. Third parties may also apply on behalf of an individual and company.
