Mowi reported to have bought uninhabited Scottish island off Skye
Salmon farmer Mowi has reportedly bought an uninhabited island three miles off the northern tip of Skye.
The Scottish Sun wrote that Fladda-chuain had been on the market at offers over £190,000. The newspaper reported on its website that it was understood that the tides around Fladda-chuain will allow the company to trial new working methods, but that Mowi declined to talk about the purchase.
According to the Scottish Sun, Mowi stated: “Any purchase of that nature would be announced via the usual channels and detailed in our quarterly reports. Mowi has no further comment at this time.”
Flat Island of the Ocean
The island had been listed for sale by Edinburgh-based chartered surveying and chartered forestry firm Goldcrest Land & Forestry Group, which said the name Fladda-chuain is derived from the Old Norse for “Flat Island of the Ocean”.
The island sits just northwest of the Trotternish peninsula, is 240 metres at the widest point and around 1.3km long, covering 67 acres. The highest point is 29 metres above sea level.
A sea lagoon protected by an outer reef can be found to the north, and a colony of seals lives on the southeast of the island.
