Minister seeks to keep Norway-UK trade door open

Norwegian fisheries minister Harald T Nesvik has held talks with his Westminster counterpart, George Eustice, as he seeks to ensure continued UK market access after Brexit.

“The UK is one of our most important seafood markets. This is also where we have seen the greatest growth measured in export value so far this year. I am concerned that we get at least as good market access for Norwegian fish to the UK after Brexit as we have today,” said Nesvik during a visit to London yesterday.

The UK is a big market for both Scottish and Norwegian farmed salmon.

Nesvik also said it was “crucial” that the countries agreed on future management of areas where they have joint fisheries.

“I am optimistic that we will succeed when we, after the United Kingdom leave the EU, will have a tripartite management in the North Sea between them, the EU and us,” said Nesvik.
