Fire destroys Marine Harvest smoked salmon factory
The smoked salmon plant of Marine Harvest Kritsen, in Landivisiau, in the Brittany region of France, has been destroyed in a blaze that is under control but will take days to extinguish completely.
The fire broke out at around 3pm on Wednesday and spread rapidly. Twenty-two vehicles and 75 firefighters were deployed to tackle the blaze.
Almost all the facilities were destroyed, including the 7,000 m² production section.
The 146 employees who were in the facilities were evacuated without problems, but two firemen suffered minor injuries.
The cause of the blaze, which started in the southwest section of the building, is being investigated.
The Kritsen plant was founded in 1994 and has been a subsidiary of the Norwegian giant Marine Harvest since 2006. The company employs more than 300 people and hires around 200 temporary employees during peak periods.
