Salmon farming giant Mowi said today that it is initiating a so-called strategic review of its integrated feed division.

“The review will consider all available options, including a possible sale,” the company said in a press release.

In 2024, the feed division generated operating revenues of €1.122 billion and an operational EBITDA of €62 million.

The feed division’s core assets are feed mills in Norway and at Kyleakin on Skye in Scotland. The Norwegian facility has a production capacity of 460,000 tonnes – including one ongoing capacity expansion of 60,000 tonnes which is expected to be fully operational by the second quarter of 2026 – and the Scottish plant has capacity for 240,000 tonnes, for a total capacity of 700,000 tonnes. These plants covered virtually the entire feed requirement of Mowi's European salmon farming operations last year. In total, Mowi's feed division provides 140 full-time equivalent jobs.

“In just a few years, Mowi has grown from a 400,000-tonne fish farmer to approaching 600,000 tonnes, with production in seven countries and 11 fish farming regions, with all the complexity that entails. Mowi also has extensive processing operations in 26 countries. In order to streamline operations, we therefore believe that the time is ripe to consider how our feed division should be organised in the future,” said Mowi chief executive Ivan Vindheim in the statement.

Mowi has engaged Arctic Securities to assist in the review.

The company emphasises that although it is now implementing a structured process, there is no certainty that a transaction will take place, or on what terms.

“Mowi will provide further updates when relevant, but does not intend to comment further on the process unless and until a final agreement is reached, or the process is concluded,” it said.
