Man in his 20s died in accident at Norway fish farm

A fish farm industry service boat crewman in his 20s died in a work accident near a SalMar salmon farm site in Norway on January 1.

At 15.20, the police in Trøndelag were notified of a serious work accident at a quay facility on Frøya in Trøndelag, where a man died after he got stuck between a boat and a quay, writes NRK.

In a press release, the police state that he was first reported critically injured, but was later confirmed dead, according to the report.

SalMar Farming AS confirmed in a press release that there had been a serious work accident involving service boat contractor FSV AS.

The accident happened at SalMar’s Ruggstein site outside Frøya, and the person involved was employed by FSV.

Witness staements

“He got stuck between a boat and a quay. The police secured witness statements and the scene to find out what happened,” police lawyer Ole Andreas Aftret told NRK just after 6pm on Saturday night.

Frøya municipality’s crisis team, the Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority and the Accident Investigation Board have also been notified of the accident.

In the course of one year, there are about 30 work accidents with deaths in Norway, reported NRK. Several of these take place in the aquaculture industry.

“It is known that there is a high risk with aquaculture. But it is too early to say what has happened in this case,” Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority section leader Marit Torsvik told NRK.
