Smart Fishfarm ‘a solution for the high seas’
Stavanger-based company MariCulture has applied for 16 development permits for its Smart Fishfarm, which it describes as "a comprehensive solution for the high seas".
The permits the company has applied for indicate an MAB of 12,480 tons, but the areas in which the farms would be deployed has not yet been declared.
Jan Vatsvåg, general manager of MariCulture, told kyst.no that the company was established in October last year and that the main shareholder is Ids Invest, owned by Vatsvåg himself.
“The company has expertise in aquaculture and offshore technology,” said Vatsvåg, who is currently in China. “This knowledge has been used to develop a concept that is based on facilitating aquaculture in open and unprotected waters. The concept is an open cage focusing on work and welfare.
“Visually, you can see the Smart Fishfarm looks something similar to the SalMars/Ocean Farming ocean pens,” Vatsvåg says, but he adds that there are many significant differences with SalMar concept in terms of design, solutions and allowable weather criteria / wave heights.
“We are looking at the possibilities for construction in China, but the equipment will be mainly Norwegian,” Vatsvåg says.
