Fish escape from site with suspected ISA
An unknown number of fish have escaped from a Norwegian farm where there is a suspected outbreak of infectious salmon anaemia (ISA).
Norway’s Fisheries Directorate received a report from SalMar last Friday about the escape at the Oterneset site in the Vågsfjord outside Harstad.
The following Monday the Food Safety Authority reported that ISA is suspected at the site.
Metre-long tear
The escape was notified after a metre-long tear was discovered in a net. SalMar has deployed recapture nets and caught four individuals. The fish in the damaged cage have an average weight of 4kg.
In order to get an idea of the extent and distribution of the escape, the Fisheries Directorate wants tip-offs from the public who catch escaped fish in the area. It also wants photos of any catches.
