Top trout firm’s green pledge

Dawnfresh Seafoods, one of the UK's largest trout producers and seafood processors, has this week pledged to help reduce food waste and greenhouse gas emissions by signing the Courtauld Commitment 2025.

Over 90 organisations – including Warburton’s and Premier Foods from the food and drink industries – have signed the agreement.

Dawnfresh had supported the previous Courtauld agreement, known as Courtauld 3, by minimising waste within its operations, as well as identifying new markets for material that would be traditionally regarded as waste.

The Courtauld Commitment 2025 is a voluntary agreement that is being led by the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) with three aspirational targets:

20% reduction in food & drink waste arising in the UK.

20% reduction in the greenhouse gas intensity of food & drink consumed in the UK.

A reduction in impact associated with water use in the supply chain.

Richard Swannell, Director of Sustainable Food Systems, said: “Courtauld 2025 is our most ambitious agreement yet and we are delighted that Dawnfresh Seafoods Ltd has pledged their support as signatory. We are faced with some big challenges ahead with rising populations, climate change and dwindling resources. But tackling food waste offers a practical option to address these challenges and, in doing so, will create new opportunities. Only by working together can we hope to realise the big changes that are essential to ensuring a more prosperous future for individuals, business and the planet.”

Speaking on behalf of Dawnfresh, HR Director Helen Muir said: “Dawnfresh is thrilled to be working in collaboration with other large organisations in our sector to drive real change for the community and the environment through the Courtauld Commitment 2025. This pledge allows us to work directly with our retail customers to tackle the rising levels of food and drink waste in the UK.

“Dawnfresh is focused on sustainability over the coming years, to ensure that we can provide both our customers and consumers with the highest animal welfare and environmental standards, throughout our entire supply chain process, from egg to plate.”
