Loch Duart floats home delivery plan to replace lost customers
Salmon farmer Loch Duart is contemplating selling its fish directly to the public for the first time after its food service markets were decimated by the Covid-19 outbreak.
The Scourie-based producer’s sales model is designed for business to business sales and all its fish normally go to wholesalers and distributors.
But the outbreak has forced the closure of restaurants and hotels where Loch Duart’s fish would be served, leaving it in need of another market.
Home delivery
Loch Duart is now asking its Facebook followers whether they would be interested in home delivery of its salmon and wants them to complete a short survey about the possibility.
“As you will understand many people are facing challenges in purchasing fresh produce in these difficult times. That’s why we’re asking you if there’s any way we can make it easier for you to buy Loch Duart salmon,” said the company on Facebook.
Fish van
Its survey asks potential customers if they would be interested in purchasing Loch Duart salmon online, to be available for delivery throughout the UK, and if they would like to buy it from a van, to be available in parts of Scotland.
Readers are also asked where they would like to buy Loch Duart salmon, and which of three products they would like – a whole side of salmon, a pack of 2 fillet portions and /or a pack of 5 fillet portions.
Loch Duart produces around 6,000 tonnes of salmon annually in the Hebrides and Sutherland. It employs around 115 people.
