LACQUA19 promises a treat in the heat

The Latin American and Caribbean Chapter of the World Aquaculture Society (WAS) will celebrate its 25th anniversary in Costa Rica next month when it hosts a convention offering an extensive choice of presentations and a trade show with more than 50 exhibitors, including Fish Farming Expert’s Chilean sister publication, Salmon Expert.

The academic agenda for LACQUA19, which takes place in San José from November 20-22, includes sessions on the socio-economics of aquaculture, and work in species such as salmonids, shrimp, tilapia, algae, pangasius, zooplankton and ornamentals, among others.

There are talks on nutrition, technologies, production systems, toxicology, diseases, health, sustainability, genetics, education and digital transformation.

Sponsored sessions

Five sessions sponsored by companies include Ingredients for Aquafeed (sponsored by DSM) led by Jorge Suarez, and Functional Ingredients (Jefo, Vymisa, Zinpro) led by Walter Campos.

In a special session, members of the CYTED LARVAplus network from countries such as Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Spain, Portugal and Costa Rica will present all the works related to the development and improvement of fish larvae production in Latin America. The session will be led by Dr Enric Gisbert.

There is also a special session on Ecology and Cultivation of Macrobrachium, led by Dr Wagner Cotroni Valenti, a member of the WAS, who is a research scientist and professor at the State University of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Industry forum

An Industry Forum will take place on November 21. The morning session will focus on the main advances made in aquaculture in Costa Rica, and in the afternoon private companies will host sessions.

These include:

  • Maximising the benefits of multi-enzymes for aquatic diets: Potential for growth and performance in tilapia, led by Janielle Wallace, who has been invited by MSD.
  • Sustainability in the marine fish industry of warm waters, an emerging market, led by Eduardo Coronas, from BioMar.
  • Different types of vaccines for tilapia and their benefits, led by Luc Grisez, from Merck.
  • Trace Mineral Role in the Replacement of Fishmeal, led by Claudia Silva, from Zinpro.
