Canada-based food and nutraceutical company Bioriginal Food & Science Corporation, a subsidiary of global fish farmer Cooke, has expanded into Germany.

Bioriginal has bought Pflanzenölmühle Kroppenstedt GmbH, a family-owned milling company that specialises in the pressing of plant-based oil products from conventional and organic sources and operates as Kroppenstedter Ölmühle.

“We are so pleased to welcome Kroppenstedter Ölmühle’s 35 employees to Bioriginal. Our companies have a shared passion for innovation, a commitment to high production standards and top-quality products,” said Bioriginal president Shannon Sears.

He joined Kroppenstedter Ölmühle managing director Eike Döpelheuer in Germany to make the announcement. Döpelheuer will continue in his role under the new structure, reporting to Sears.

Oilseeds

Established in 1922 in Kroppenstedt, around 100 miles east of Hanover, Kroppenstedter Ölmühle specialises in processing of oilseeds from conventional and organic cultivation for the development and production of vegetable oils, press cakes, oil cake flour, and the refining of vegetable oils.

Its facilities include three plants at two sites with different capacities for receiving of seeds, bulk storage, pressing, milling, oil refining and logistics. An internal laboratory where new technologies for processing oil seeds are developed rounds out the company’s capabilities.

Supplements

Biorigin, headquartered in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, has facilities throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. It manufactures natural foods, ingredients, and supplements for companies in the human and pet nutrition industries.

Cooke, based in New Brunswick, Atlantic Canada, is one of the world's largest salmon farmers, with operations in North America, Scotland, Chile, and Australia. It also farms prawns in Honduras and Nicaragua, sea bass and seabream in the Mediterranean, and recently acquired barramundi farming company in northwestern Australia.

Family-owned Cooke also has a fisheries division, a marketing operation, and producers its own salmon feed in Scotland.
