‘Unexpected’ turnout for Grieg NL info session
1000+ people showed up at a second employment information meeting hosted by Grieg NL earlier this week.
Representatives of Grieg NL hosted a second employment information meeting this week, and as a company officials told a local newspaper, they were pleasantly surprised by the amount of people interested in learning about employment opportunities with the salmon producer.
The proposed project aims to produce 600 full-time jobs, 1,400 indirect jobs, and diversity the economy of the south coast of Newfoundland. Along with the salmon hatchery and grow out, Grieg NL plans to be involved in a lumpfish hatchery, a feed plant and processing.
Appeals by conservation group rejected
But not everyone is excited about the new project, and on September 1st, the Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) launched an appeal of the project, stating that there is potential to impact the wild populations of Atlantic salmon due to a number of reasons. The organization argued a full environmental impact statement should be conducted.
Just a few days ago, the appeal was rejected by the Newfoundland and Labrador Environment and Climate Change Minister Perry Trimper.
According to a media release on their website, the ASF is reviewing the response "with experts in environmental assessment to determine the best course of action".
