After the microalgae bloom affecting the salmon industry in recent weeks, the dismissal of some 5,000 workers in Chile's salmon industry is expected in the second quarter of this year.

The data was presented by Felipe Sandoval, president of the Association of the Chilean Salmon Industry, Salmonchile, who was a guest at the meeting of the Committee on Fisheries, Aquaculture and Maritime Interests of the Chamber of Deputies, which extraordinarily met in Puerto Montt.

According to the information published in El Llanquihue, during his speech, Sandoval explained that “total layoffs should be of around 4,800-5,000 people, considering the price crisis we had last year and the recent algal blooms.”

Under this scenario, Sandoval revealed that the largest employment effects “will now be seen in the second quarter,” contrary to what he had in his initial projections, which established major layoffs in the second half of the year.
