Volumes drop 8%

Chile's salmonid harvests were 8% lower in the first four months of this year compared to the same period of 2015 - largely due to a sharp drop in coho production.

The volume of Chile's salmonid harvests totaled 223,771 tonnes up to April 2016, representing an 8 per cent decrease compared to the same months of the previous year (243,689 tonnes) according to figures submitted by the Association of the Chilean Salmon Industry (Salmonchile), which represents about 95 per cent of the local Atlantic salmon production.

A comparison of results itemized by species shows a 5 per cent decrease in the Atlantic salmon harvests from 187,091 tonnes to 177,748 tonnes; a 36.8 per cent increase in rainbow trout harvests, up to 28,217 tonnes; and a 50.5 per cent decrease in coho salmon harvests, which fell to 17,806 tonnes.

In geographical terms, the Region of Aysén contributed with 49.3 per cent of all harvests up to April 2016, followed by the regions of Los Lagos (41.7%) and Magallanes (9.0%).

The figures represent 95 per cent of the country's Atlantic salmon production, 55 per cent its trout and 76 per cent of its coho salmon.
