Signs of hope in Chile

The year-on-year value of Chilean salmonid exports has finally surpassed the 2015 figures, thanks to a gradual improvement in returns each month this year.

Chilean salmonid exports were worth just over $ 1.8 billion in the first half of this year - an increase of almost $3 million or 0.2 per cent compared to the same period of the previous year.

The Y-o-Y difference was of -1.5 per cent in May 2016, -1.7 per cent in April 2016 and of -4.9 per cent in the previous month.

However the value of exports for the first six months of 2016 was 22.3 per cent lower than in the first half of 2014 ($2.3 billion), according to figures from the Central Bank of Chile.

Chile exported $1.59 billion in salmon products (Atlantic and coho salmon) as of June 2016, up by 1.6 per cent compared to the same period of the previous year. Exports of rainbow trout, however, totaled $208.58 million - a decrease of 9.5 per cent compared to the first six months of 2015.
