Smolt set-out to increase 12% in Chile
Chile’s aquaculture authority, Subpesca, has revealed that the country’s salmon farmers project a 12% increase in the number of smolts put to sea in the first half of 2019.
A recent Technical Report published by Subpesca showed the distribution of the number of fish and species which will be set out in the Salmon Concession Groups (ACS) that start their collective fallow periods between October 2018 and March 2019 and, consequently, begin their productive periods between January and June of 2019.
In the preceding period 135 million fish were set out, a figure projected to rise to 151 million between January and June 2019.
The increases vary for Chile’s three salmon farming regions. Aysen has the biggest increase of 20% to a little over 40 million fish, Magallanes increases 16% to just above 10 million, and Los Lagos increases by 7% to more than 90 million fish.
