Values drop despite export increase

The value of Chilean salmonid exports to all markets decreased in the first 11 months of 2016, despite the sales volumes remaining similar or even increasing.

According to figures from Salmonchile, the country exported 527,375 tonnes of salmonids in the first eleven months of this year, worth US$ 3.2 billion. These figures represent a 4.1 per cent increase in volume and a 19.5 per cent decrease in value.

124,116 tonnes of those exports went to Japan up to November 2015, 6 per cent more than in the same period of 2014 and 6 per cent lower compared to the first eleven months of 2013. Despite the stability in volumes, the returns from those exports experienced a 21 per cent decrease, dropping to US$ 697 million.

Exports to the US totalled 131,038 tonnes, which is very similar compared to the same period of 2014 and represents a 14.0 per cent increase compared to the first eleven months of 2013. In turn, the value of those exports experienced a 15.6 per cent decrease, down to US$ 1,086 million.

A similar situation was experienced in Brazil, where exports totalled 86,373 tonnes up to November 2015, showing an 8 per cent increase compared to the same period of 2014 and a 21 per cent rise compared to the first eleven months of 2013. By contrast, returns have decreased 14 per cent, dropping to US$ 443 million.

Finally, shipments to Russia totalled 59,707 tonnes, which is almost identical to the same period of 2014 and represents a 20 per cent increase compared to the first eleven months of 2013. Returns from this market have experienced a 21 per cent decrease, dropping to US$ 289 million
