SSPO seeking ‘exceptional leader’ as chairperson
The Scottish Salmon Producers’ Organisation (SSPO) has launched a search for a new chairperson to replace current chair Gilpin Bradley.
Bradley, managing director of small-scale salmon farmer Wester Ross Fisheries, has carried out the role for the last two and a half years.
Edinburgh executive recruitment company FWB Park Brown has been hired to find suitable replacement candidates.
A spokesperson for the SSPO said: “The SSPO has been undergoing a process of change - including the recruitment of a new chief executive - during which time Gilpin Bradley has very ably undertaken the temporary role of Chairman to help steer us through the transition.
“The SSPO is now reverting to having an independent Chair. We look forward to recruiting someone who will relish the role of representing one of Scotland’s most successful and dynamic food sectors.”
An 11-page candidate brochure includes an introduction to the SSPO by its chief executive, Julie Hesketh-Laird, who writes that she is leading a process of change that includes an organisational restructure to support an emerging three-year SSPO strategy and operational plan.
Review of governance
“The incoming Chair will lead the Board and Executive to take forward a detailed review of the governance of the Board and organisation and support the bedding in of the ongoing structural changes,” writes Hesketh-Laird.
“The Board wishes to see further change implemented to put in place a world-class salmon producer organisation operating with the highest levels of effectiveness.”
The brochure says it would be helpful if candidates had experience of aquaculture or a closely related industry, “however, we are also keen to consider very strong candidates who may not have an aquaculture background but who will bring exceptional leadership skills to the Board”.
Essential attributes for the new chair are a passion for the cause of the SSPO; outstanding leadership skills with the experience, abilities and diplomacy to guide the SSPO through a continuing period of change and renewal; a reputation for probity and integrity; an ability to devote sufficient time to the discharge of the duties of the chair.
Familiarity with the strategic management of a complex and changing business, experience of broadening an organisation’s audience and engagement, and the experience, abilities and diplomacy to guide the SSPO through a continuing period of change and renewal are listed as desirable qualities.
