Cermaq adds gyms to new feed barges
Cermaq salmon farm workers in Chile will have a more comfortable life when the company takes delivery of five new 400-tonne feed barges.
Each barge has two living rooms, a gymnasium and a meeting room and is designed so that rough seas have less impact.
The first barge will be ready in April, after 180 days of work, and will go to a farm in the Magallanes area, according to the company’s press release.
Better quality of life
“These pontoons (barges) are 400 tonnes and consider a series of improvements in different aspects, such as better resistance to waves and current, more comfort in habitability and more autonomy in food and fuel,” said Cermaq operations manager, Mauricio San Martín.
Referring to the enhanced living quarters, San Martín added: “This is an important step because it translates into a better quality of life for people.”
Astilleros Calbuco and Aquamet are in charge of the construction of the barges.
