Mowi West engages the local community
Mowi West is connecting with the local community of Vancouver Island through youth programs, environmental initiatives and community events to help support its business goals.
“We're always working to increase the understanding of our business and our number one goal is improving our relationships with First Nations where we operate.
“We're working to develop an exciting plan for the spring and summer season,” said Jeremy Dunn, director of community relations and public affairs, Mowi West.
“Over the last seven or eight years we've raised just over $170,000 for charity so that's really the focus for us.”
Mowi holds regular community gatherings that help raise funds for local charities and groups. “ This year we'll have our community barbecue again. We bring the BBQ, we bring the chef's, we bring the salmon and we sell burgers salmon burgers or salmon tacos or for whatever we're making that day and we sell it.”
Great connection
“We get a great connection with the community and it gives us an opportunity to talk to people on the island about our business. We allow people to taste and try our salmon and most importantly allows us to give back to the community and charities that are doing really important work on Vancouver Island,” said Dunn.
Mowi West supported over 130 community organizations last year. They sponsor the elite Upper Island Riptide program which is a premier league soccer club on Vancouver Island. They also sponsor a number of other soccer teams, Native tournaments in Klemtu( near BC’s central coast), basketball teams, as well as the Campbell River swimming club and skiing club.
The goal for Mowi this year is to engage the local youth and focus on youth health. Mowi also plans to continue helping with restoration and environmental health initiatives. “We want to have more people in our communities develop a greater understanding of our business and create a positive connection with our people, with our company and our fish,” said Dunn.
