Quebec aquaculture industry receives clean technology funding
The federal government of Canada has provided funding for aquaculture farms in Quebec that want to adopt clean and sustainable technologies.
Under the Fisheries and Aquaculture Clean Technology Adoption Program (FACTAP) $355,000 in federal funding will be available to support aquaculture growth in Quebec. The projects receiving funding will help fisheries and the aquaculture industry adopt greener practices to improve energy efficiency, reduce waste and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
The funding will support three new projects in Quebec. $303,750 in federal funding will be used for an advanced industrial scale waste treatment system to improve water quality and reduce wastewater impacts at a land-based rainbow trout aquaculture operation in southern Quebec.
Centre de Transfert et de Sélection des Salmonidés will receive $29,043 for the installation of an incubator to maintain the temperature of brook trout eggs that helps prevent against infections which reduces the use of treatment products in the operation. Lastly, Pisciculture de la Jacques-Cartier will receive $22,500 for UV filters that will reduce fungus outbreaks throughout the early stages of salmon rearing activities.
Environmental sustainability
"The Government of Canada is supporting projects under the Fisheries and Aquaculture Clean Technology Adoption Program to enhance the environmental sustainability of our fisheries and aquaculture sectors. Investments in clean technology will help businesses adopt greener practices, while ensuring they remain competitive in the global trade market," said Jonathan Wilkinson, minister of fisheries, oceans and the canadian coast guard.
Quebec is also contributing $239,000 to help fund environmentally friendly sustainable initiatives in the province.
FACTAP is a federally run program. It has committed to providing $20 million over four years to help canadian businesses incorporate new, clean technologies into their day-to-day operations, accelerating the use of more sustainable and efficient tools, practices and techniques.
