Canadian authorities have cancelled a tsunami warning for Vancouver Island and surrounding areas that was issued following an earthquake of magnitude 7.9 off Alaska earlier today.

The undersea quake had its epicentre 281 kilometers south-east of Kodiak City, prompting the issue of a tsunami warning to several areas along the north American west coast, including the salmon farming area of Vancouver Island.

An update on the EmergencyInfoBC website said: "The Tsunami Warning previously issued for coastal areas of British Columbia has been CANCELLED because additional information and analysis have better defined the threat.

"Continue to listen to instructions from local officials until the ALL CLEAR has been issued in your community."
