Newfoundland TV reported that the Aqualine Midgard cage was moved into the Lawn harbour last week.

The sizes of the cages range from 147 to 160 metres in circumference and weigh 47 to 50 tonnes. The cages will be taken to a sea farm location in Fortune Bay which is in the Gulf of St Lawrence.

According to the 2016 census report Lawn is home to 624 residents so building the cages in the harbour benefits the local economy.

Hope

Lawn mayor John Strang said: “It gives people hope that this aquaculture industry will be something that's beneficial for the whole region; this project here now we have six jobs. We've gotten some spin-off in rentals and in the stores, getting fuel bought and stuff like that. So it's benefiting the area. This is long-term work. It's something the kids from the school can look forward to.”

The Marystown project is expected to generate more than 800 new jobs in the area once full production is under way. That estimate includes 440 direct jobs at Grieg and local processing facilities.

The entire cost of the project is $250 million.
