Grieg harvested 75,600 gwt of salmon in Norway and Canada last year

Norway and Canada salmon farmer Grieg Seafood harvested 23,700 gutted weight tonnes of fish in the fourth quarter of last year, and 75,600 gwt for the whole of 2021, it said in a market update today.

The figures exclude volumes from Grieg’s Shetland operation, which was sold to Scottish Sea Farms for £164 million on December 15.

Harvest volumes by region for Q4 2021 were:

  • Rogaland: 7,300 gwt
  • Finnmark: 12,400 gwt
  • British Columbia: 4,000 gwt

Average regional farming costs per kg for Q4 2021 were approximately:

  • Rogaland: NOK 43.6
  • Finnmark: NOK 38.1
  • British Columbia: Can $9.4 (NOK 65.49)

Grieg is poised to expand production in Canada with the introduction of the first smolts to marine farms in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, in the spring.

Grieg has exclusive use of Placentia Bay for salmon farming, and as of September 2020 had been granted eight licences corresponding to a total capacity of 30,000 tonnes, with three further licences pending.

Farming activities in the Newfoundland region are expected to have a long-term annual harvest potential of up to 45,000 tonnes.
