Mowi hires Huntsman to track down best broodfish
Mowi Canada East has signed a 10-year contract with the Huntsman Marine Science Centre to provide local support to its salmon breeding programme.
The Huntsman Marine Science Centre in St Andrews, New Brunswick, is a research and outreach facility that educates people about ocean science, sea life, and the environment, and also engages in research and special projects.
“Our partnership with Huntsman adds a great deal of knowledge and talent to Mowi’s already impressive global research and development capacity,” said Mowi Canada East in the October edition of its Insite staff magazine.
“Working in partnership, Mowi and Huntsman are doing genetic selection work to produce the most robust fish for future generations.”
In-house geneticists
Mowi said Huntsman had specialised staff and facilities that are unique in Atlantic Canada to complete the necessary tasks to advance the breeding project.
Hunstman will be working with Mowi’s hatchery staff, as well as at Mowi processing facilities to monitor and measure the results of the work over time.
The breeding programme will involve Huntsman scientists, Mowi Canada East experts, and in-house geneticists within Mowi Genetics located in Norway and Ireland.
