On May 19th, the representatives of small fishermen and shellfish-gatherers from Ancud agreed with the Government to stand down their demonstrations and accept the compensatory measures offered by the Government. These were the last demonstrator groups in conflict due to the ‘red tide’ affecting the area.

The coordinator minister in this conflict and Minister of Economy, Luis Felipe Céspedes, welcomed the agreement and praised the willingness of fishermen and communes to reach a solution that will come to the aid of families who have been affected by the phenomenon.

After the signing, Céspedes said “this has been a complex process, but has shown that dialogue is the only way in such situations”, which according to the Secretary of State, speaks highly of the will of the Government and the leaders and mayors of the 15 communes with which agreements have been reached.

The authority announced that compensation payments will begin today (May 23rd) to about 4,000 families affected by the red tide, including those of shellfish gatherers and divers.

Céspedes also said that all efforts are being made so that shortages of supplies are taken care of as soon as possible and cities can regain their normal activities.
