Islands Games association nets more support from salmon farmer
Sponsorship ‘reinforces our passion for promoting health and wellbeing in the communities where we live and work’ says Bakkafrost Scotland MD
Salmon farmer Bakkafrost Scotland, formerly the Scottish Salmon Company, is to continue sponsoring the Western Isles Island Games Association (WIIGA) as its members prepare to travel to Guernsey for the 2023 NatWest International Island Games.
Run with the support of volunteers from across the sporting community, WIIGA works in partnership with local sports clubs throughout the Western Isles and provides support to athletes to enable them to take part in the competition against 23 other islands from across the world, every two years.
This year’s competition is expected to have 3,000 participants.
The 2023 event will see the biggest WIIGA squad yet, with around 110 athletes and support team travelling to Guernsey. They will spend a week (8-15 July) competing in sports including football, indoor bowls, golf, badminton, cycling, shooting, swimming and athletics. WIIGA will be competing in women’s golf and archery for the first time.
Long-term support
“We are very proud to continue our long-term sponsorship of the Western Isles Island Games Association,” Bakkafrost Scotland managing director Ian Laister said in a press release. “This partnership reinforces our passion for promoting health and wellbeing in the communities where we live and work.
“As training will soon be under way, we wish everyone in the Western Isles team the best of luck.”
WIIGA general team manager Iain GG Campbell said: “Our partnership with Bakkafrost Scotland is of great benefit to the Western Isles Island Games Association, and it really shows the benefits that a successful sponsorship can provide for the local community.
“We must extend our thanks to them for their continued support which enables us to invest in uniforms, merchandise, and to help promote the work we do with the team and the games.”
