Scottish operation surpasses volume for whole of 2023

Faroes and Scotland salmon farmer Bakkafrost harvested 27,000 gutted weight tonnes in the third quarter of this year, it said in a market update today.

Most of the volume – 21,600 gwt – was harvested in the Faroes, in line with Bakkafrost’s strategy of harvesting 70% of its Scotland-raised fish in the first half of the year to avoid the biological problems that have been caused by warmer sea surface temperatures in Q3 in the last few years.

Bakkafrost Scotland harvested 5,400 gwt in Q3, although this was still more than in the same period last year when the company faced challenging biological conditions and harvested just 4,100 gwt.

Surpassed 2023 harvest

So far this year, Bakkafrost Scotland has harvested just over 24,000 gwt, an increase of more than 5,000 gwt compared to the same period last year, and more than the 20,598 gwt harvested in the whole of 2023.

The harvest volumes in the Faroes and Scotland for the first nine months of 2024 add up to 70,149 gwt, an increase of 14,210 gwt (25%) compared to the 55,939 gwt harvested in the same period in 2023.

Bakkafrost’s feed division, Havsbrún, sold 41,500 tonnes of feed in Q3, and sourced 40,000 tonnes of raw materials.

The group’s full Q3 2024 report will be released on 5 November 2024.
