Mowi Chile launches salmon tours in Aysén
Mowi Chile is starting a “Salmon Tourism” initiative in conjunction with a local tour operator in the Aysén region after a successful pilot with invited guests.
The tour is intended to show both locals and visitors to the area the complete salmon farming cycle, from hatchery to processing.
The tour begins with a visit to a smolt facility on the shores of Aysén Fjord and concludes at a processing plant in Puerto Chacabuco, located at the head of the fjord.
Mowi has not included any marine farms to the tour because the sites are fallowed, but they will be added next year when there will be fish to see in the pens.
Demystifying farming
One of the guests on the first tour was Aysén deputy (MP) Marcia Raphael, who said: “It is very important to be able to be informed about the activities carried out by the salmon farming industry, in this case the company Mowi, and also to be able to demystify some beliefs that the community has regarding the salmon industry and to be able to develop a much more important link with the community.
“I believe that this is an important factor for the development of the Aysén region and without a doubt we have to work together as a whole - the authorities, the public sector, the private sector - to be able to move the region forward and the only way is unity and what better than to know from inside how the company works. So, I am very happy and I have a lot of homework for the future.”
Pride in the job
Fernando Villarroel, general manager of Mowi Chile, said: “We are proud to be able to start this project and we are very interested in being able to show, with great pride, our professionalism and the technology of the processes that we have in each of the stages of salmon farming.”
The tours, which will continue during the summer months of 2022, also include explanatory videos, audio guides, contests and a salmon tasting.
