St Lawrence makes space for aquaculture support sector
A new industrial park that includes space for the aquaculture industry will be built in St Lawrence, Newfoundland.
"The town of St Lawrence is developing an industrial park to support the region’s growing mining and aquaculture sectors.
“The new park will provide the town with the necessary infrastructure to attract new businesses and better position itself to respond to the increased demand for commercial space with the reactivation of the St Lawrence fluorspar mine and development of the Grieg NL aquaculture project in Placentia Bay," said a Canadian government news release.
This spring work will begin on a new industrial development of eight fully-serviced lots. The federal government contributed $949,947 while the local government of Newfoundland and Labrador has contributed $365,364 towards the industrial park project.
"The initiative is part of the town’s strategic plan to increase community capacity and develop infrastructure to foster business development, create partnership opportunities and support long-term economic growth in the region."
Employment opportunities
“This project will certainly bring employment opportunities to our community and attract and support businesses in offering services to the mining and aquaculture sectors. We are so pleased that this will enhance the economic growth and sustainability in our town and region," said St Lawrence mayor Paul Pike.
“The Government of Canada is making strategic investments that build on competitive regional advantages and support the diversification of our communities,” said Navdeep Bains, minister of innovation, science and economic development.
“We are pleased to partner with the Town of St Lawrence in this industrial park development, which will foster new opportunities for sustainable economic growth and help create long-term prosperity."
Grieg NL
The Grieg NL project was announced in 2018 and includes a hatchery, land-based smolt production facility and sea-based operations. The Grieg NL project is expected to generate 800 new jobs once full production is reached in St.Lawrence. This does not include the additional jobs that will be created through other commercial businesses and the reactivation of the St Lawrence fluorspar mine within the new park.
