ASC approves 9 salmon sites
Los Fiordos recently received ASC certification for nine of its farming sites, "becoming the Chilean company with the most farms certified, and globally as one of the most sustainable companies committed to this demanding standard," said the company.
For a fish farm to be certified under this standard, among many requirements, the company has to demonstrate compliance with stringent environmental standards, responsible use of drugs, fair and safe working conditions, transparent and cooperative relations with neighboring communities and friendly production protocols with the protected fauna.
"Achieving the ASC certification of all its production at the sea is precisely the cornerstone of the Memorandum of Understanding subscribed between Los Fiordos and the WWF in March 2015, an unprecedented agreement in the history of the Chilean salmon industry," said the company.
"With nine farms ASC certified, we have already exceeded 25 per cent of our production certified under this standard in the first year of the MOU," said general manager, Sady Delgado. "This achievement is recognition of a responsible work ethic towards our employees, the environment and the communities around us," the executive said.
ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council) is an independent, nonprofit organization founded by WWF (World Wildlife Foundation) and IDH (Dutch Sustainable Trade Initiative) and its main objective is to manage the global standards for responsible aquaculture.
