Fishing grounds forecasters net innovation award

An Icelandic company that combines artificial intelligence, big data, and satellite information to predict the best locations for fishing boats with up to 8-day forecasts has won the international Seafood Innovation Award 2025.

The award was presented to GreenFish at the North Atlantic Seafood Forum currently taking place in Bergen, Norway.

The winner was voted for by the audience and the award jury, and both chose GreenFish from a shortlist of seven finalists who made presentations at NASF.

70-90% accuracy

GreenFish says it can forecast fishing grounds for all major pelagic fish species in the territorial waters of Iceland, Norway, and the herring patch with 70-90% accuracy, and can forecast the expected catch amount at each fishing ground with 70-80% accuracy.

It says it will soon add a quality forecast for each sea area, enabling skippers to increase the value of each catch with forecasts for average weight, condition factor, and fillet yield.

The jury explained its choice by saying that GreenFish’s forecasting not only solves critical challenges in the industry but also represents a scalable and future-oriented solution with significant growth potential. Its solution can reduce large amounts of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Enormous potential

“The company is a worthy winner with enormous growth potential that we look forward to following in the future,” said Trude Jansen Hagland from the competition organiser, NCE Seafood Innovation.

In addition to a cash prize of NOK 25,000 (£1,764), the winner will receive tailored entrepreneurial support in key areas such as strategy, marketing and business development. This is something Sveinn Sigurdur Johannesson, one of the company's founders, is very pleased with.

“It is a great honour for us to receive the Seafood Innovation Award for 2025. At GreenFish, we will continue to push the boundaries of innovation within the blue economy.”
