Chile tops US exports

Chile was the largest exporter of salmon and trout to the USA in the first five months of the year, sending 60,626 tonnes - up 6.5 per cent compared to the same period of 2015 (56,919 tonnes).

The value of these salmonid products was $548.49 million, however, which equates to a 0.8 per cent decrease compared to the $552.83 million registered in the first five months of 2015. However, this negative result is every month smaller, rising from -8.6 per cent in accumulated returns in February, to -6.4 per cent in March and -3.9 per cent in April.

Canada and Norway

Canada was in second place, with returns of $294.01 million and 40,665 tonnes. Those results represent 14.7 and 11.2 per cent increases in value and volume, respectively, compared to the first five months of 2015.

According to the trade data published by the Fisheries Statistics Division of the NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service, Norway was in third place with sales of $187.4 million and 19,871 tonnes. Those numbers represent 32.0 and 22.4 per cent increases in value and volume, respectively.

Other countries

Meanwhile, China (China, Hong Kong and Taipei) was in fourth place, with returns of $93.25 million and 17,188 tonnes. These figures represent 12.9 and 0.4 per cent decreases in value and volume, respectively, compared to the first five months of the past year.

Finally, the United Kingdom was in fifth place, with returns of $43.97 million and 4,833 tonnes - an 11.3 per cent increase in value despite a 4.2 per cent decrease in volume, compared to the first five months of the past year.

In total the USA imported 157,901 tonnes of salmonid products up the end of May, which were worth just over $1.3 billion.
