
Salmon industry contributes to low unemployment rates
According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), the 11th Region (Aysén) obtained the second lowest unemployment rate in the country during the trimester October-December 2011 with 4.2%.
The Region of the Lakes was the Chilean region with the lowest unemployment rate in the period. Moreover, Puerto Montt is the Chilean city with the lowest unemployment rate in the period with 1.4%. By contrast, in the trimester January-March 2010 and after the sanitary crisis triggered by the ISA virus, Puerto Montt registered an unemployment rate of 9.9%.
INE includes aquaculture and salmon farming activities under the tag 'Fisheries', which experienced a 12% increase in its employment rate in an year-to-year comparison. From 14,840 jobs in Q4 2010 it increased up to 16,600 jobs in Q4 2011.
