Salmon blood helps spinal cord injuries
USA: Sea Run Holdings Inc., a Maine marine biotechnology company, has spent twelve years developing two major products they hope can help treating people with spinal cord, brain or tissue injuries.
The company is using salmon plasma proteins in these products. One product, the Sea Stat CNS, is a salmon fibrin product which the company claim is capable of minimizing damage caused by spinal cord and traumatic brain injury. The second product, Sea Stat HS, claims to help clot blood and can potentially seal torn or wounded tissue.
According to an article in The Journal of New England Technology (JNET), Sea Run has reached the stage with both these products that they are ready to conduct human clinical trials starting next year.
The company says that one of the major advantages of their technology is that they use raw material, farmed salmon blood, which is in abundant supply.
Previously, biomedical and pharmaceutical companies have been using zebra fish for testing and research. Using direct application of salmon products to humans is new and unique, according to the JNET article. Sea Run's research has been funded through more than USD 4 million in grants from the National Institute of Health and the US Department of Defense.
