Oyster sales break records at Waitrose
Sales of oysters, available from the fish counter, were up 87 per cent last week at the supermarket. While over the last four weeks volume sales stood 42 per cent ahead year-on-year, Talking Retails reports.
Waitrose fish buyer, Jeremy Langley, told the news source: “Oysters sales at Waitrose are at record levels. The current popularity of our Scottish oysters is because cost-conscious consumers are looking to create romantic restaurant-style dinners at home.”
Other special-occasion seafood selling well includes king scallops that rose 32 per cent last week and 36 per cent in past four weeks year-on-year.
Lobster tails and whole Madagascan tiger prawns also doing well, with the tails up 26 per cent and the prawns 33 per cent last week year-on-year by volume.
Additional signs that shoppers are looking to make romantic meals include asparagus, with sales at Waitrose up 61 per cent in the last week, Talking Retail said.
