Harvesting Welsh sea bass
Bluewater Flatfish Farm, owned by Selonda Aquaculture - a Greek aquaculture concern specialising in farming species such as sea bass and sea bream in the Mediterranean - is situated near Beaumaris on Anglesey in Wales. It is the first UK-fish farm to have started commercial, land-based production of sea bass on a larger scale. The company was established in 1998, and was originally producing turbot for the British market.
“The sea bass is of Welsh stock, collected from Anglesey”, says Phillip Gatland, Manager of Selonda UK and Bluewater Flatfish Farm. According to Gatland the company is targeting the UK market. At the moment all the farmed sea bass in Britain is imported from the Mediterranean.
“Our fish has local provenance, and will be differentiated in the marketplace. We expect a premium; it is fresher fish as it does not have to travel as far – we should get four days extra shelf life - and it is from the UK,” he says.
