Cold Water Fisheries new player in Newfoundland aquaculture
Canada: Ontario based Cold Water Fisheries Inc. (CWF) has moved into the Coast of Bays, Newfoundland, after purchasing a local company, Nova Fish Farms almost a year ago.
CWF made the purchase in October 2007. The Nova Fish Farms sites were located in the St. Alban's area. Since the takeover CWF has been expanding the operation and now have two cages in Aaran Cove and 14 cages in Hardy Cove. The company expects to have about 500,000 rainbow trout in their cages by December.
The company already has farms in Ontario and Nova Scotia, but in order to meet increasing demand from customers, they needed to increase their production. According to the company they expect to expand their operations in Newfoundland in the future.
Currently the tout is being processed at the Barry plant in St. Alban's and packaged at their Nova Scotia plant according to customer specifications.
CWF operate their own hatcheries, grow-out sites and processing plants in Ontario and Nova Scotia. This is their preferred model, which may be the future of their Newfoundland operations as well.
Cold Water Fisheries Inc. was established twenty years ago in Ontario. They specialize in rainbow trout and Arctic char.
