Chileans and Scots lose out in US
Chile was the largest exporter of salmon and trout to the USA in the first eight months of this year, exporting 90,364 tonnes, although this was a 4.2 per cent decrease compared to the same period of the previous year (94,340 tonnes). The largest decrease was in the exports of fresh whole Atlantic salmon.
Canada was in second place, with returns of $428.98 million for 63,483 tonnes - 32.9 and 63.9 per cent increases in value and volume, respectively, compared to the first eight months of 2014. The largest increases were in fresh whole Atlantic salmon.
According to the trade data published by the Fisheries Statistics Division of the NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service, Norway was in third place with sales of $237.59 million and 26,723 tonnes - increases of 13.2 and 50.5 per cent in value and volume, respectively. In this case, the largest increases were in frozen fillets and fresh whole Atlantic salmon.
Meanwhile, China (China, Hong Kong and Taipei) was in fourth place, with returns of $164.45 million and 26,481 tonnes - down by 5.1 and 11.7 per cent in value and volume terms, compared to the first eight months of 2014. The largest decrease was in frozen fillets of salmon NSPF.
Finally, the United Kingdom was in fifth place, with returns of $72.06 million and 9,344 tonnes - down by 32.2 and 23.5 per cent in value and volume, respectively, compared to the first eight months of the past year. The largest decreases were in fresh whole and fresh fillets of Atlantic salmon.
US imports of all salmon and trout products as of August 2015 totalled 236,303 tonnes, worth $1,925.42 million, representing a 6.7 per cent decrease in value and a 9.4 per cent increase in volume, compared to the same period of 2014.
